ORMSBY (CARSON) COUNTY

GHOST TOWNS

I have not personally visited all the ghost towns on this list. Ormsby County will be the subject of a future book of mine but current conditions listed, if not visited by myself, are reports from fellow ghosttowners or other literary sources. For additional information, consult Stanley Paher's Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps.

CLEAR CREEK STATION

Station was founded in late 1850s. A number of sawmills were active nearby during the 1860s but once that activity ended in the mid 1860s, Clear Creek Station was abandoned.

EMPIRE CITY

Established in 1855 as a stage station with a tavern. A townsite was laid out in 1860 as a response to the boom in Virginia City and the availability of water for milling operations. Wood harvested in the Sierras was floated down the river and retrieved at Empire. During the early 1860s, three large mills were built. Population of the town grew as high as 700. However, the decline of the Comstock saw the mills close one by one. Population was only 150 by 1880 and Empire was virtually abandoned by 1900. The mill foundations and a couple of older homes remain at Empire. The extensive cemetery is located just off of US 50, surrounded by a cement plant.

SWIFT'S STATION

Established in the early 1870s as a stop on the way to Lake Tahoe. An impressive three story house was built but the road was never heavily used and the station was no longer used by 1880. Only the extensive foundations of the station house remain.
